Meet the king of our garden. I call him Buddy, but that’s only because I call every cute animal buddy and I also like to think he is my buddy. He isn’t as fat as he looks, but he puffs up his feathers to protect him from the cold and also, I think, to look more impressive. And he needs to look impressive to do his job as king of the garden.

As king of the garden, it’s his job to protect the garden and the food it provides from intruders, most notably the blue tits. Whenever a blue tit comes close to our porch, to get to the aforementioned food, Buddy appears out of nowhere to scare him away. And it actually works, unlike with the blackbirds, who are not impressed – not even when he is puffed-up. Luckily, the blue tits are bold enough to try again and again, so don’t worry: they have plenty to eat.

The king of our garden is also very alert and made my job of capturing him on camera quite the challenge – including sneaking over the kitchen floor to reach the window without him seeing me. But it was worth it.
