These are all photos from our trip to British Columbia, Canada in May of last year. More specifically, they depict everything I look forward to seeing, eating, drinking, feeling and doing again when we return this year. Only this time, I’ll get to enjoy it a little longer, because we’re going to be living in British Columbia, Canada for a couple of months!

We’d been playing around with the idea of living abroad for a while, forever. It was always in the back of our mind ever since returning home from New Zealand back in 2008. We were always waiting for the time to be right, which is a tricky thing of course. When is it ever right? But it started to feel like a “now or never” kind of thing and never wasn’t an option. So we finally decided when and where.

When: we fly to Vancouver on May 28th. We don’t know when we’ll be flying back; it depends on how much we like it there, but we’re thinking we’ll be there for at least six months.

Where: we don’t exactly know where we’ll be living yet, but we’re looking at houses for rent in the direct proximity of Victoria on Vancouver Island. We wanted to rent a home in Vancouver, but since we’ll be needing a lot of room for both Joop’s studio and mine, a small apartment wouldn’t cut it. And anything more is, unfortunately, unaffordable in Vancouver. We loved Victoria as well and it offers us a chance to live outside the city, closer to nature, but close enough to enjoy it’s pubs and restaurants. And Vancouver is just a beautiful ferry ride away.

If you live in or around Victoria or know someone who does, I’d love to connect! Maybe you have recommendations on where (not) to live, what to watch out for when renting a home, where to go, what to do, see, eat? Any information is welcome. I’m so excited!

  1. How exciting!!

    • It is! Pretty scary as well, but you know what they say: the world is right outside your comfort zone ;)

  2. Cool! We’ll be up in Vancouver for vacation around that time. It’ll be one of our last weekend trips in the area before we take off for Alaska.

    • Ah yes, you have a pretty exciting trip ahead as well! Can’t wait to follow your adventures. And Vancouver is so nice, you’ll have a great time, I’m sure.

  3. Ooh this is exciting! I’ve been to Vancouver twice and loved it. Oh and Vancouver Island was so quaint. I keep hearing good things about this place in Vancouver http://meatandbread.ca/. We’re thinking of heading to New Zealand for a holiday this year, what areas did you like the most?

    • That place looks amazing! I’ll definitely try to remember to visit when we’re there. Looks like just the place for us :)

I’d absolutely recommend going to New Zealand on holiday, it is such a beautiful and friendly country. We’ve been around most of both islands and especially loved the South Island. It has the most beautiful beaches, fjords, mountains, glaciers and forests. Such diverse landscapes in a relatively small area. Highlights were Queen Charlotte Sound, Abel Tasman National Park, the cities Wanaka, Arrowtown, Queenstown and their beautiful lakes and Milford Sound. But we basically loved it all!

      • Thank you! I’ve been in the depths of hours of research online and had come to the conclusion that a road trip around the South Island would be great (and photogenic of course!). Thanks for mentioning those places, a couple of them I hadn’t considered so will now take off on another tangent researching them!

  4. Oh wow, how exciting! And that first photo on the plane is stunning – the light is amazing!

you’ll be arriving at a perfect time of year!

    • You live in Deep Cove? Lucky you! I loved it there! It was truly one of my favorite places. If we could rent a home there, it would certainly be in the running :)

  6. Oh my gosh! This is so exciting, can’t wait to hear about your adventures.

  7. wow this is HUGE!! I am so excited for you two!! the Vancuver area looks stunning from your pictures, that greenery in the top pic looks like a tropical jungle and the latter ones the beautiful pacific northwest i imagine. will you be working on web design out there or will you both seek other work? i can’t wait to see/hear more, this is just so exciting !!

I meant to comment on this sooner – this is such exciting news! I am from Canada so I think you made an exceptional choice :)

My aunt lives in Vancouver and that whole area is a beautiful part of the country. You will have a wonderful adventure there!

Congratulations on being brave and taking the plunge!

  9. Lovely photos… making me a bit homesick! I am from Vancouver and living abroad right now, in France. While I love it here there are some things about home that I miss dearly and it’ll be bittersweet going home :)

    Enjoy your adventure.

  10. Mag ik je komen bezoeken? Please?
